Chitalishte Shalom Aleichem – 1945

About us:

The Chitalishte bears the name of one of the great Jewish writers Solomon Rabinovich, better known under his pen name Shоlеm Aleychem. It was founded following the decision of the Initiative committee of the Jewish community in Plovdiv. The primary function of the chitalishte is to serve as unifying forum and an active branch for the cultural and educational activities of the town’s Jewish community. The organization began its activities with a well-structured cultural program and 600 book volumes. Two clubs were formed – “Socio-economic” and “Literary”. The chitalishte set up a chess club for children and a theatre/drama group. The entry fees collected for taking part in the evening gatherings organized by the chitalishte were used for enriching the book holdings of the library or for charity. The chitalishte also set up a string orchestra and a choir. The courses conducted on its premises included Yiddish and French language courses as well as literacy courses for factory workers in the town of Plovdiv. The community house works in close cooperation with the City Chitalishte Union and takes part in all town-wide chitalishtes initiatives.

At the end of 1948 Shalom Aleichem Chitalishte became a city neighborhood chitalishte which was to offer services for the following neighborhoods: Saedinenie (Unification), Ivan Vazov and Antim I, while preserving its ethnic makeup. It quickly achieved integration in its activities and soon caught up in terms of the range of initiatives offered with the other chitalishtes in town. At the end of 1963 the library subscribers amounted to 8,000 readers and its on-loan holdings were 24,000 volumes of literature for children and adults. The chitalishte is part of the project Glob@l libraries. Nowadays the activities of the chitalishte are numerous and some of the most widely recognized ones are the language and music schools which enjoy a well-established history and quality.
