Marin Yonchev: Italian Opera Evening
The young Bulgarian tenor with an international career, Marin Yonchev, will perform his first solo opera concert in Bulgaria on September 1st at 19:30 at the House of Culture "Boris Hristov" in Plovdiv. The recital, titled "Italian Opera Evening," suggests that we will enjoy some of the most beloved arias written by famous classical composers born in Bootsha.
Marin Yonchev started his musical journey at a very young age. His talent was recognized almost instantly, leading to numerous awards from singing competitions. For many years, he was a soloist in the Plovdiv Boys Choir "Stefka Blagoeva." He graduated from the National School of Music and Dance "Dobrin Petkov" in his hometown of Plovdiv under the guidance of Neli Koycheva. In 2013 and 2014, he participated in masterclasses with Raina Kabaivanska in Bulgaria and Italy. His education was complemented by a bachelor's and master's degree in the class of Maria Dyakonu at the Geneva University of Music.
Marin stepped into the spotlight with his appearance on the popular children's television music show "Like the Lions," which opened doors for his professional career. In 2000, together with his sister Sonya Yoncheva, he won first place in the "Hit Minus One" competition. In 2004, he received the Alliance Française award for a young performer. In 2005, at just 16 years old, he became the grand winner of Bulgaria's first musical reality show, Star Academy. A year later, he was awarded the BG Radio Annual Music Awards in the "Debut Performer" category for his song "A Meaningless Day."
Despite his many successes in pop music, Marin Yonchev discovered his true calling in opera singing with his distinctive lyrical tone and precise musical technique. In the summer of 2020, he participated in the concert "Return" with Sonya Yoncheva at the Ancient Theater in Plovdiv and in the "Bulgaria" Hall with the Sofia Philharmonic. Simultaneously, he toured with Kaludi Kaludov in Vienna. In September 2013, he was invited to perform at the castle of Belgian Prince Philip, and the following year our tenor participated in a concert in Plovdiv organized by Raina Kabaivanska to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Boris Christoff's birth. Other performances by Marin Yonchev include several guest appearances in recitals in Germany, Russia, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Bulgaria, as well as a concert dedicated to peace in Jerusalem and Ramallah, Palestine.
"I am extremely excited to sing for my wonderful Bulgarian audience and pay tribute to one of my favorite world tenors, Mario Lanza, performing iconic arias from his repertoire written by iconic Italian composers," shares Marin Yonchev.
The accompaniment for the "Italian Opera Evening" concert will be entrusted to the virtuoso Estonian pianist Ave Wagner, who graduated in "Piano" from the Academy of Music and Theater in Tallinn, later obtaining a master's degree from the Lyon Conservatory. For years, she has been a vocal coach and pianist at the Lyon Opera and the Geneva Conservatory. She has accompanied masterclasses with world opera stars such as Teresa Berganza and Daniel Borsa. She regularly tours with various musical programs in Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Poland, and Finland.
