A reconstruction of Bulgarian custom and music from the 16th century is shown in the Ethnographic Museum on Music Day

On October 1, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., the project "Reconstruction of Bulgarian custom and music from the 16th century" will be presented in the Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv, which is included in the calendar of the Autumn Art Salon - Plovdiv. It is supported by the Plovdiv Municipality, and the Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv is an official partner.

The date was not chosen by chance. October 1st is International Music Day. This project was inspired by the report of a German pastor from the middle of the 16th century, sent on a diplomatic mission to the Ottoman court, who, along with all the interesting information about the Bulgarian way of life, left us a short sheet music text of a Bulgarian folk song. In Bulgarian musical history, the earliest preserved sheet music of folk or secular music dates from the end of the 19th century.

On October 1, you will see in sound and vivid picture the entire custom related to Bulgarian hospitality and what are its roots, restored after researching written, pictorial and archaeological data.

Many specialists from different fields took part in the realization of the project, who put all their heart and soul, touched only by an exciting story and a wonderful melody from the past. Dr. Alexandra Fall (Montreal/Canada) helped with the reading of the musical text, and maestro Vanya Konsulova (Pazardzhik) helped with the more detailed folklore research and sounding. Dr. Kalina Atanasova (Budamba Atanasova - Varna) restored the costumes of the era. Music group Freija (Freija - Plovdiv) put all their creative energy into restoring the music and instruments, and the choreographer Emil Ivanov turned the little information about movements and steps into dance. Dr. Dimitar Atanasov (Institute of Ethnology and Folkloristics with Ethnographic Museum at BAS) will take on the role of the pastor who left us this invaluable information.

Many artisans and craftsmen took part in the project, and with the handmade objects they will help us touch the spirit of the era.

The project is implemented by the Association for the Restoration and Preservation of Bulgarian Traditions Avitohol - Varna, chaired by Jasmin Parvanov.
