THE MUSEUM: UNEXPECTED, OPEN, SHARED
Musing where the Guggenheim’s gold toilet meets with Bulgarian museums? What the Devil has to do with trains? How the harbinger of death – the owlet – may save human lives? Come to The Museum – Unexpected, Open, Shared exhibition of the National Museum of Military History.
This is an unusual exhibition, in which interpretation of history transforms perspectives on museums. Whereas in the past the museum dictated the grand narrative of history illustrated through a rich collection of artifacts, today a solitary exhibit conveys a multitude of diverse histories. Presented provocatively, the exhibits will reveal the limits of our own perceptions and tolerance; will challenge us to become creators or to observe from the sidebar; will surprise, and ultimately help us to understand ourselves, and the world around us, better.
In this exhibition, visitors chose for themselves whether to follow dogmatic notions on cultural heritage, or to consider it opportunity to interpret differently times and events.
The unexpected show merits an unexpected venue – one with ambition to establish itself as a new attractive space for culture for Plovdiv: the building at 76, Osvobozhdenie Blvd, where the Aviation Museum will move in soon.
The project is part of the programme of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019.
