About the workshop:
The workshop aims to introduce the participants to the specificities of Sidra Bell's choreography approach, which is a unique and multi-layered system that triggers the artistic potential of every artist by provoking choreographic movements that are engendered in the individual's body as a combination between the physical and the mental.
The workshop explores the physical by laying stress on the processes of organization, description, effort, risk, as well as abandonment, power of observation, spontaneity, breath, aesthetization of gesture, touch, space positioning, sound production, defining and fixing boundaries. Touch, therapy, psychology, state of mind and awareness, are the primary objectives of the workshop. Artists of different backgrounds and experience will be able to discover not only their personal voice, but also gain deeper physical understanding of their body and its potentials.
The participants will first acquaint themselves with the company's approach after which they will have to deconstruct and analyze its principles. The dancers will be challenged with tasks to investigate the depths of the physical and aesthetic complexity of choreography, which will raise their awareness about all the possibilities of the available tools. The aim is to stimulate the artist's imagination and intellectual potential to achieve greater freedom of thought and movement.
The workshop will provide practical knowledge in the field of group improvisation, conventional tasks work, dialogue, performance, and the creative process of the investigation. Work will be dynamic and leave the participants with a feeling of fatigue but also enthusiasm. The artists will be put in a situation of constant choice. Sidra Bell's work emphasizes a high degree of physicality and cooperation, encouraging the dancers to move with determination, freedom, curiosity, calmness, empathy, ease, and concentration.
This project is supported by The Trust for Mutual Understanding, administrated by Movement Research and is carried out with the financial aid of The Embassy of the United States in Bulgaria.
