The Butterflies Festival includes a series of events showing the diversity of one of the most beautiful groups of animals in nature - their flight, journey, transformation and beauty, developing thus a new instrument for knowledge and audiences.

Program 03-06 September 2021 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday) from 10:00 h. to 18:00 h.

Exhibition of drawings from the "Butterfly World" competition - Exhibition of the participants in the drawing competition on the theme "Butterfly World", where visitors will be able to see the works live.
Photo pavilion "Red Apollo" - Visitors to the festival will have the opportunity to take pictures with a painted model of the protected species of butterfly - Red Apollo.
Body art "Butterfly faces" (10:00 - 12:00; 13:00 - 15:00) - Drawing children's faces on a butterfly theme with ecological paints.
Butterfly extravaganza painting studio - Visitors will have the opportunity to recreate the world of butterflies with different artistic techniques.
Workshop for making butterfly masks and souvenirs - Making butterfly-shaped face masks and other souvenirs.
Find me in the jungle game - An educational game for recognizing the different types of butterflies from Tropic Hall, according to their silhouettes.
Drawing with butterfly-themed chalks - Drawing with colored chalks for the youngest visitors.
Video material for the residents of Tropic Hall
Broadcasting a video about Tropic Hall and its tropical representatives.

As part of the festival program, two specialized lectures on butterflies are planned, which will be given by prominent Bulgarian scientists in the field.

In the last 2 years, the Plovdiv Regional Museum of Natural History has built the only Tropic Hall in Bulgaria with a collection of live butterflies, where visitors can see, meet and experience a huge variety of butterflies from different parts of the world.

The project idea The Butterfly Festival aims to expand the educational, informational, and visual part of the Hall "Tropic" by organizing an hybrid festival. The festival includes online and open air activities.

The project raises awareness, knowledge, and experiences with the nature that surrounds us, offering a new event for the cultural scene of Plovdiv and the region, developing a new tool and audiences to touch and relax wildlife, as well as increase their knowledge about it.


Project idea of ​​the Regional Museum of Natural History Plovdiv, part of the Legacy programme of Plovdiv - European Capital of Culture 2019.

"Changes in the "Butterfly Festival"
Due to the new more restrictive measures announced by the Ministry of Health, which come into force on September 7 and will last until October 30, 2021, we are introducing changes in the holding of the "Butterfly Festival". Some of the events will be held within the next four days from 3 to 6 September 2021, with an extended duration.
The planned opening of the event with special guests will not take place.
The planned specialized lectures on butterflies will be held online in September. Specific dates and more details are yet to be announced.
Photos of the drawings participating in the competition, on the topic "Butterfly World", will be published on the Facebook page of the Regional Museum of Natural History - Plovdiv. The works with the most likes will receive special prizes. The winning participants will be rewarded in compliance with the current anti-epidemic measures."
