The national autumn exhibitions are held in September in the exhibition spaces of Balabanov House, Hindliyan House and Permanent Exhibition Mexican Art (City Gallery of Fine Arts) in Old Plovdiv. They are one of the first events of the Autumn Salon of Arts in Plovdiv, part of the city's cultural calendar - a forum for contemporary Bulgarian art, providing an opportunity for artistic expression outside the gallery or museum spaces, where audiences usually meet visual art. The specificity of the event is determined both by the peculiarities of the houses in Old Plovdiv and by the format of the authors' presentation: in the general framework of a comprehensive curatorial project nine solo exhibitions are shown simultaneously, which turns the National Autumn Exhibitions Plovdiv into an unparalleled art forum in Bulgaria.

Since 2013, National Autumn Exhibitions have completely changed the form of presentation, thus creating an opportunity for understanding the contemporary Bulgarian art. The project Forcing the Choice (2013) featured ten recently graduated artists, which attempted to overcome the artificial boundaries between the "young" and the "old" in art. This line was also strengthened in the projects Removed Systems (2014), An Pasan (2015), Mirror (2016), Placebo (2017), Beyond the Surface (2018), Poetics of the Image (2019) and Places Restantes (2020), which focuses on the modernization of classical media painting, graphics, sculpture, drawing, etc., corresponding in contemporary art in a natural way with photography, digital printing, installation, video and others. An important focus in the Autumn Exhibitions is the presentation of new names for the Bulgarian audience, the presentation of a debut exhibition, significant creative figures related to Plovdiv, as well as the participation of Bulgarian artists living and working abroad.

This year's exhibitions will be held under the title Thresholds and Scars. This problematic focus is not intended to set a theme for the participants, nor to urge the audience to understand the exhibitions through its prism. As in the other editions of the Exhibitions, the focus identifies the sensations that are present in the entirety of the edition in parallel and in a potential dialogue with the artistic manifestations. As they evolve from their function of establishing, registering, and managing permeability, passing through the idea of ​​overcoming different limits, thresholds carry the implications of a multidirectional boundary — both spatial and temporal. In their two-dimensionality, the scars - on the contrary, stabilize the traces, fix in a concentrated event fleeting and instantaneous phenomena. By testifying to the former presence of things that are beyond themselves, the scars are located in a constant race with memory.

The event is implemented with the support of the Municipality of Plovdiv as part of the Cultural Calendar of the city for 2021.
