The exhibition was realized jointly with the Bulgarian Living Roots Foundation and with the kind assistance of ECONT Ltd. It presents in large photos a wonderful collection of traditional costumes from different regions of Bulgaria. Most of them were made more than a century ago and can only be seen in the museum.

Apart from its everyday purpose, the Bulgarian traditional costume also has a socio-cultural role, which is felt and recognized in any costume, regardless of its territorial affiliation. The clothing reflects the sense of beauty, color harmony and symmetry, and on the other hand, reveals the knowledge in detail of the natural resources.

For the richness and cultural diversity of the costume, in addition to belonging to a particular ethnic group or ethnographic group, the determining role was played by gender, age, marital status, livelihood, faith, traditions. This variety can be seen in any village and can be found in any item of clothing.

Each costume tells its own story…

The exhibition is part of the European Heritage Days initiative. You can see it in the yard of the Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv from 1 to 30 September 2021.
