REGIONAL ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM - PLOVDIV
presents
"THE KNIFE - SYMBOL, TRADITION, GRACE"
Author's exhibition of master knife maker Lyubomir Dudev

The opening of the jubilee exhibition of master Lyubomir Dudev - a member of the Association of Masters of Folk Crafts will take place on December 3 at 17.00 h. in the Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv. He worked as an engraver and jeweler, and in recent years has transferred his mastery in the making of knives, turning them into works of art shown through his eyes.

In the Bulgarian tradition, the knife serves not only for protection, but also for decoration and prestige. Such is the idea of the master Lyubomir Dudev to show the beauty and elegance of the weapon. To pay attention to the function of the knife as jewelry, part of men's clothing and to emphasize its importance as a symbol of social status.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is "The Goat's Horn" or also called "Bulgarian Vendetta", because killing with such a knife symbolizes revenge. It is made of a horn with a richly inlaid handle. Among the works is a bachelor's knife, which is the first knife a father gives to his son when he grows a beard. The more decorated the knife, the richer the boy's family. You will also see the karakulak (ear knife) used by the shepherds for protection, which the master compares to the Thracian mahaira. It is also known as a Rhodope or shepherd's knife with a specific shape at the end of the handle, which looks like ears so that it does not slip out of the hand.

Come and see these and many other unique knives inlaid with natural stones and beautifully engraved, each with its own message.

The exhibition is extended until the end of December 2021.
