A charity exhibition raises funds for the restoration of the community centre-monument in the town of Shipka from 1934, a miniature copy of the National Theatre
The Svetlina -1861 Community Center in Shipka and the Ancient Plovdiv Municipal Institute invite Plovdiv residents to a special exhibition, which bears the title "Light for Shipka". The charity exhibition presents 50 works by artists from all over the country who embraced the cause of raising funds for the restoration of the community center-monument in the town of Shipika.
The opening is on 1 May 2022 at 11.00 h. The exhibition can be visited until May 8. The Svetlina -1861 Community Centre in the town of Shipka was one of the first in the country, founded in January 1861 by the teacher Hristo Karadzhov. In the beginning it was housed in the room next to the church pulpit, and in 1870 it moved to the newly built school. Only one year later, with the production of "Mnogostradalna Genoveva", a very fruitful theatrical activity was launched. The hall of the class school soon proved to be too small for the active creative activity and the rich theatrical repertoire of the amateur artists of the Svetlina Community Centre. They began to dream of a new building that could accommodate all their creative needs. The funds for the construction of the building have been raised over the years through voluntary donations of money, rose oil, etc., and volunteer builders and the entire population of Shipka participated in the construction. The new building, completed in 1934, is a scaled-down replica of the National Theatre, with amazing acoustics in the concert hall, and its stage has provided the setting for numerous theatrical productions and film screenings over the years. In the 1980s measures were taken to extend the building and modernise the stage, but unfortunately in 1989 the refurbishment was put on hold and the community centre moved back to the class school building where it is still housed today.
Some of the paintings featured in the "Light for Shipka" exhibition were created during an art plein air workshop held in the summer of 2021, and the rest were donated by artists who wished to join the cause. The exhibition features works by over 20 artists.
