A large exhibition of paintings and graphics by the iconic artist for Burgas and Bulgarian art - Georgi Baev - Jurlata will open on June 9 at 6 pm in the Kapana Gallery.
He was born in 1924 in Burgas. He graduated from the National Academy of Arts (1949), majoring in Painting, with professors Iliya Petrov and Dechko Uzunov.
In the exhibition “Georgi Baev (1924 - 2007). Painting. Graphics "includes works from different periods of his work - from his earliest graphics from the 50's (" Boy "1957," Drawing "1957," Boats "), in the 60's, when Baev categorically chose painting as his creative faith ("Morning" 1962, "Alley", "Boats" 1963) to paintings and graphic works from the 80's.
In the late 60's and early 70's Georgi Baev moved away from direct copying of nature, focusing on abstract lyricism and conventionality of the landscape fragment ("Beach" 1974, "Landscape in Blue" 1975, "Beach" 1979) .
His most mature period includes the 70s and 80s of the twentieth century, a time of dynamic creative activity in which the sea became a major theme in his work. Baev's seascape stands out among the many traditional interpretations of the theme by other Bulgarian mariners with unexpectedly bright and rich colors, with generalized and clean forms. His canvases create a feeling of the static beauty of the sea, of the proximity of the dream horizon.
The burning passion with which Baev works comes from the power of fire: in 1983 his studio was set on fire, hundreds of works were destroyed. The burnt sails that survived the fire remind us that courage is a test at all times. In a direct echo of reality, Baev's works gradually became dramatic, the figure appeared, the anxiety for man. The colors are dense and saturated, have a strong psychological sound. He no longer paints boats and the sea, the sky…, because with them he said what is necessary, Baev was changed: “This fire shook me so much that after that I made my best exhibition and only for seven months… When I'm angry and desperate, I work the most. " This exhibition is the occasion in 1986 for the artist to win the Herder Prize of the Vienna Academy of Arts. It is featured in the 34-volume art dictionary of the London publishing house Macmillan.
Reaching the wisdom of aging, he reconciled with himself and the world and returned to optimism and light in his earlier work, but now with a life-enriched worldview.
Georgi Baev was a member of the VII Grand National Assembly (1990-1991).
He died on February 18, 2007 in Burgas.
The exhibition at the Kapana Gallery of the City Art Gallery - Plovdiv exhibits paintings from the cycle "Memory" and the series "Barriers", includes works from the collection of the Burgas Art Gallery "Petko Zadgorski", from the collection of the artist's family and the Municipality Burgas.
Guests at the opening on June 9 will be Diana Savateva - Deputy Mayor for Culture, Tourism and Sports of Burgas Municipality, the artist's son - Ivo Baev, and Lyudmila Kutieva - Head of Cultural Center "Sea Casino" and Gallery "Georgi Baev" in the seaside town.
The exhibition will be open until June 29.
At the same time, the Burgas audience will enjoy the exhibition "Engravings from the studios of the Louvre - XVIII - XX century" with works from the collection of the City Art Gallery-Plovdiv in implementation of the Cooperation Agreement between the two municipalities.
