He was elected Minister of Culture by President Mitterrand in 1981 after speaking on his presidential campaign. He is the creator of the Fête de la Musique, held on June 21 every year. The festival is aimed at amateur musicians and professional music performers who organize free and spontaneous outdoor performances. After 1981, this day gradually began to be celebrated in many countries around the world. Currently, the International Music Day is organized in more than 150 countries on 5 continents.
Since 2013, Jacques Lang has been President of the Institute for the Arab World in Paris and is working to increase its activities and influence.
Especially for the association "Choose Bulgaria" Mr. Jacques Lang gave an interview in which he talks about this fascinating holiday, which conquered almost all countries in the world with the power of music. The interview was conducted with the assistance of Radio Energy. Here is what he said about Bulgarian music:
"Bulgarian music is very rich. I had the opportunity to meet some musicians, remarkable violinists. Your music is part of the ancient tradition and the fusion of Byzantine, Slavic and Ottoman cultures. There is a whole series of facts that make Bulgarian traditional music recognizable, such as The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices, this female heart that is characterized by vocal harmony. I know that the voices are conducted by Dora Hristova, have a traditional repertoire and modern arrangements. Polyphonic singing is very touching and moving, such as the use of intervals and vibrato. And let's not forget that "The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices" sings the original soundtrack of the video game "Alone in the Dark" or the great success of Mariana Popova at Eurovision in 2006 with the song "Let me cry", the virtuosity of the great Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov. Bulgaria is truly a country of music. "
