In 2022, the Institute of Tracology celebrates 50 years since its foundation as an independent scientific unit of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. It was established in 1972 as a specialized scientific unit for interdisciplinary studies of the history and culture of the Old World, in which Ancient Thrace was born and developed on two continents - Europe and Asia. The institute is charged with the function of coordinating studies on the history and culture of Ancient Thrace and the Thracians in the context of Paleo-Balkan studies, the study of pre-Greek and non-Greek elements in the ancient Balkan and West Maloasia cultural-historical space. The focus is on the Thracian heritage - history, culture and language in the broad context of Indo-European studies and as an essential part of the European and world cultural-historical heritage.
Founding scientists of the Institute of Trachology are: Vladimir Georgiev, Alexander Fall, Velizar Velkov, Georgi Mihailov, Ivan Venedikov, Hristo Danov, Vasilka Tapkova-Zaimova, Zlatozara Gocheva. The first director of the Institute is Prof. Dean Alexander Fol.
Since 2010, the Institute of Tracology has been merged with the Institute of Balkan Studies and transformed into the Institute of Balkan Studies with the Center for Tracology "Prof. Alexander Fall" at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which is the universal legal successor of the two original institutes converted by merger.
A poster exhibition presents the 50-year history of the Institute of Tracology and the research fields in which scientists continue to work in close cooperation with other institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, preserving the basic method of interdisciplinarity of the studies of history and the culture of the Old World and Ancient Thrace.
The exhibition is organized in partnership with the Institute of Balkan Studies with the Center for Tracology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and TRAKART.
