"Spiritual routes in Plovdiv 2022" takes place in two stages - in June, and now - in September and October. The project is financed by the Municipality of Plovdiv and is part of the Cultural Calendar of the city.

"It is no coincidence that the social phenomenon of shared space became widespread at a time when people increasingly became aware that they inhabit not spaces, but zones: airports - highways - amusement parks - playgrounds - malls - beauty salons - cruise lines ships - destinations. Today we are placed in worlds between worlds, in non-places whose identity fades with each passing moment; non-places whose inner multidimensionality and relief are erased by habits of use; non-places whose origins melt into urban consumer amnesia.'

Prof. Dr. Galina Lardeva

LITERATURE AND HISTORY

Route: Plovdiv and socialism.

A look through literature and history

25/09/2022, Sunday, 11:00 a.m.

Meeting point: "Roman Stadium" square - behind the mosque

Dr. STEPHAN SHIVACHEV

Historian, since 27 he has been the director of RIM - Plovdiv, author of publications on the history of the Plovdiv region, head of international and national projects.

Associate Professor MLADEN VLASHKI, Ph.D

Doctor of Comparative Literature and Philosophy. He is a university lecturer, literary historian, critic and journalist. Since April 2018, he has been a lecturer in Bulgarian language, literature and culture at the Slavic Seminar of the University of Freiburg.

The route passes through the places associated with the socialist period of book publishing and distribution:

Roman Stadium Square

The spiritual center of the eternal city of Plovdiv - for more than two millennia, the center of our city is the square, which Plovdiv residents traditionally call "Jumayata". It changed its name more than 10 times, but Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Ottoman Turks, and again the Bulgarians after the Liberation built the urban planning of the city from this square, from which eight streets start in the four directions. Emphasis on the redevelopment of the square after 1944 and the bookstores along Main Street.

The former Crystal Cafe

"Napkin poetry" from "Grand Cafe Crystal" by Georgi Rajchevski and memories of Zdravko Popov

The house where Dimitar Dimov lived

The novel "Tobacco" was written in Plovdiv, while Dimitar Dimov was an associate professor of anatomy and physiology of domestic animals at the Faculty of Agriculture. During one period of that time, he lived in the house at 14 Antim Street I on Sahat Tepe.

Today, a walk along "Antim" I and the neighboring streets offers extremely curious views of outdated aristocratic houses that speak of a different way of life. Unfortunately, most of them age ingloriously. Here, in this environment of rich people, of matinees, juries, big deals and dramatic twists, Dimitar Dimov discovers some of his prototypes in the novel.

The monument of Joseph Schnitter (Grape Market)

The "Grape Market" and the monument of architect Josif Schnitter - the monument is here not only because it is close to "Josif Schnitter" street, but also because it is one of the focal points for the city. A story about the contribution of architect Schnitter to the preservation of the urban appearance of the centuries-old city and the cultural-historical heritage.

Main Street (Old Greek Club, Old Bookshops)

Home of the People's Army (the so-called People's Court used to sit here) excerpt from a novel by Lyuben Stanev

The former Party House (Central Square)

Excerpt about the manifestations from Nedyalko Slavov's novel "Portrait of the Poet as a Young Man"

An account of the reconstructions during socialism - achievements and problems.

Highlights of the story are the City/Donduk garden; the building of the Regional Assembly of Eastern Rumelia/Exposition Museum of the Union; architect Pietro Montani and the work of hundreds of foreigners - specialists in various fields who work in Plovdiv. What happens when Plovdiv is no longer the capital?
