The Fortuneteller
Boris Hristov House of Culture
One morning, a witch doctor arrives in a picturesque Bulgarian village and predicts to the mayor, the pope, and the two most prominent maidens that a river of gold will soon flow to them, and someone with a fine craft will help them hide it...
Like all suckers who are late to her for money, the village's elite quartet takes a firm hold on the fishing line and frantically starts looking for the photographer Mancho, convinced that he is the man with a thin craft and will help them get rich quick. After discovering the mould for making fake money in his photo, the mayor, Pop Staiko, Tsveta and Bosilka are more than sure that Mancho will not refuse to take them on as collaborators in his profitable work. Indeed, when they tell him that they have evidence of his criminal activities, Mancho confesses to making counterfeit money, but unfortunately he can't help them get rich because there is no more paper to print banknotes. Wanting to profit at all costs from the photographer's gift, the mayor and the Pope also form a joint stock company in order to raise funds for the paper, which is bought from Vienna. Almost everybody in the village joins this company, not suspecting that Mancho is an accomplished swindler who will bring them not only to the beggar's stick, but also to the brink of despair. And after sending him away with a pallet full of money, it is not twenty days when a letter arrives to Peña the barkeeper, in which Mancho tells his friend that he has never seen "friendlier people" than those in the village, and that every last one of them is fit for caricatures in a literary newspaper!
