130 years since the birth of Hristo Peev
The Municipal Institute Ancient Plovdiv, the Foundation Bulgarian Architectural Modernism, in partnership with the State Archive - Plovdiv and the National Library Ivan Vazov- Plovdiv are uniting to present to the citizens and guests of Plovdiv the review exhibition "Hristo Peev: the researcher, the architect, the man" - a kind of tribute to the memory and the work of the famous Plovdiv architect. The aim is to present a fascinating, documentary story about the personality of architect Peev, whose research and creative activity has left lasting traces in the image of Plovdiv and the region, as well as in the architectural memory of Bulgaria.
The opening is on 31 March (Friday) at 18:00 at the Roman Stadium Square. The exhibition is realized with the financial support of KCM 2000 Holding.
In addition to this exhibition, the initiators of the celebration have prepared several other events that will take place in April. These include architectural tours of buildings designed by arch. Hristo Peev, a lecture dedicated to his life and work and another curious exhibition with dozens of archival documents and photos, author's drawings, projects and many other authentic materials.
In 1924 arch. Hristo Peev settled at the foot of Taximtepe. A few years later he began to research the old Renaissance houses, made architectural photographs, and collected information about the inhabitants of the buildings. The fruit of his long-term research is the major work "The Plovdiv House during the Renaissance". Thanks to the material collected by architect Hristo Peev, many remarkable buildings have been restored to their original appearance, and houses destroyed years ago have been "resurrected". This was the time when many of the old houses were in a bad condition, falling apart or deliberately demolished for new construction. To this day, his book on Renaissance houses is an encyclopedia used by architects, restorers and builders.
Besides being a researcher, Hristo Peev is also a productive architect, author of hundreds of buildings in Plovdiv and the surrounding area. His architectural work seems to remain in the shadow of his survey works. The survey exhibition "Hristo Peev: The Researcher, The Architect, The Man" is an attempt to illuminate many of these buildings - wonderful modern designs from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, imbued with the most current trends of modernist architecture. Ornate facades, flat roof-terraces, functional layouts - all part of the trademark of Arch. Hristo Peev, but unfortunately nowadays his building work often has the fate of the Renaissance houses of his time: neglected, demolished for new construction, transformed in an inappropriate way.
