JENIale 2023
The first edition of the project will take place from 15 September to 11 November at the Romfeya Gallery. The well-known and loved Veneta Marinova, Nadia Genova and Albena Mihailova - Benji will present three separate artistic actions. The authors, who are part of the cult group "The Women of the Edge" (created by Albena Mihaylova, Veneta Marinova, Monika Romenska, Nadia Genova), will work in creative tandem with Deliana Georgieva, Sevdalina Kochevska and Elitsa Riva.
"JENIale 2023" is a project of Romfeja-Vatev & s-ie and is funded by the Municipality of Plovdiv as part of the city's Cultural Calendar for 2023. The theme of the first edition is "APOTHEMA".Through this concept of geometry, which is used to mark distance, the artists explore the idea of distance and the distance of objects, states and actions from their source and how this defines or changes them, seen through the prism of visual art and music. Through the use of different media, something very characteristic in the artists' work over the years - video, object, performance, sound and light - a new reality is formed that draws different temporal and spatial boundaries for the viewer.
The first event of the project bears the title Inverted Bridges. It is an exhibition-art installation by Veneta Marinova and Deliana Georgieva. The opening is on 15 September at 18.00 in Romfeya Gallery, and a workshop will be held within the exhibition. The closing is on 30 September.
The exhibition-art installation sees bridges as the distance to be crossed, as an object that connects or divides. Bridges are a connection to what we are walking towards. Leading forward or facing backwards. They can be tangible or illusory. Bridges transferred across distances or across time. By visualizing history in space, the art installation builds a bridge that draws a parallel between past, present and future and allows for personal interpretations and associations.
A second artistic action is the exhibition "Distance" by Nadia Genova and Sevdalina Kochevska. Its opening is on 6 October at 6 pm and the exhibition can be seen until 21 October.
The authors consider the theme of the project as "Apothema of Time". Time as a dimension, and as a form that creates content. Two figures enact different plots. They appear in a video, their images supporting the idea of distances, spacing, divergence and following. In another format, the two figures undergo a series of stages that register the creation of an image whose elements are present both on the two-dimensional plane and in the space of which the image is a part. The two figures draw boundaries and mark distances to fix the visual edge of the distance.
With the code "Black" and the code "Pink", the two artists offer their own interpretation of the space, drawing a bridge between the two poles. The overall spirit in the art installation is complemented by the synthesis of poeticisation and visualisation, as in a short poem in the style of "Tan-renga" - a kind of short poem written by two authors.
The third and final artistic action of the project "JENIale2023" on the theme "Apotema" in the Romfeya Gallery will open on Friday, October 27 at 6 pm. The exhibition will run until 11 November.
Albena Mihailova - Benji's event with Elitsa Riva is entitled "Spectacolo" OBLIVION/ Forgetting and is a combination of exhibition-art installation - video projection - concert - performance, with the participation of students and teachers from the National School of Performing and Screen Arts in Plovdiv and the public.
At the heart of the idea of "Spectacolo" Oblivion (Forgetting) are the things that for one reason or another escape our memory. These can be well-known historical facts or personalities, incidents from our everyday lives and voluntarily or involuntarily forgotten events or objects from our lives. Or simply pictures frozen before our eyes.
