Exhibition of Bozhidar Ikonomov
Ancient Plovdiv Municipal Institute, House of Veren Stambolyan and "International Triennial of the Stage Poster" invite Plovdiv residents and guests to an exhibition of posters by Bozhidar Ikonomov (1943 - 2016). The official opening is on 21 September 2023 (Thursday) at 18.00 in Veren Stambolyan's House.
The special exhibition of the poster master Bozhidar Ikonomov within the framework of the Old Town Festival (from 18 to 30 September 2023) is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the artist's birth.
The exhibition includes 30 posters created by Bozhidar Ikonomov (Dari, as he is called) over a period of more than 30 years. 12 of the posters are from the collection of Ancient Plovdiv and will be presented in their authentic form on prints from the early 1980s in the ground floor of Veren Stambolyan's House. In the courtyard space you will find some of Dari's famous musical posters, selected from the collection of the International Triennial of the Stage Poster - an integral part of Bozhidar Ikonomov's creative and life path.
Bozhidar Ikonomov's iconic posters were created for various opera and ballet performances of the National Opera, operettas and rock operas from the repertoire of the Stefan Makedonski Music Theatre and are distinguished by their style and unique visual identity.
About the author. He has worked for 13 seasons for the Sofia Opera and Ballet, for various festivals and publishing houses and has exhibited his work in forums around the world. He is the co-founder of the International Triennial of the Stage Poster in Sofia and chairman of its organizing committee. He has won awards at international competitions in Milan, Mons, Brno and the most prestigious Bulgarian awards, including the Order of the Ministry of Culture "Golden Century".
Bozidar Ikonomov on the art of the poster: "The poster has wings. It flies high in the blue sky and looks at us from there with a big colourful eye. Sometimes posters fly in flocks. A beautiful, slender line, around white clouds with a multicolored rainbow. At night the poster shines like the moon, a white, blue, yellow, red crescent. Around it stars. In the morning the posters are perched in the city, in long rows on fences, facades. There are cages for them at intersections, but they like to stay outside. If you walk by, they reach out and grab you. They have a lot to tell you. They want to make you laugh. They can make you sad. In winter, posters fly away to warmer countries. Some stay... I paint a poster. I'll fly it like a colorful kite in the sky. I'll run after it until it breaks off and flies away on its own. Have a nice flight!"
Georgi Lozanov about the author. Like the poster, he reached people quickly, easily overcame barriers and was able to both cheer up and find a subject. The poster is urban art - so was Dari. Witty, colourful and challenging."
The traveling exhibition is part of the year-long program of the International Triennial of the Stage Poster Poster - Projections and Perspectives, supported by the National Culture Fund. The event takes place within the framework of the Old Town Festival (18 - 30 September 2023).
