For the past nine years, the Plovdiv Jazz Fest stage has been part of the world tour itinerary of some of the biggest names in jazz music, but also some of the most active and interesting young artists. The ninth edition of Plovdiv Jazz Fest will keep this tradition.

From 27 to 29 October the music of artists from Bulgaria, USA, Italy, Austria and Brazil will be heard. Plovdiv Jazz Fest director Miroslava Katsarova says: "the festival is shaping up to be a beautiful, meaningful celebration of jazz - a chamber, boutique festival where music is listened to and heard."

The main programme of the autumn jazz festival will again be at the Boris Hristov House of Culture. Each festival night will feature two concerts and will begin at 8:00 pm. The program of the ninth Plovdiv Jazz Fest focuses on instrumental jazz, chamber concerts and guitar in jazz. The result of this combination is six concerts in three days, a side program that will include two more concerts, a book launch, a concert by the youngest in jazz, and jams each night after the main program.

Plovdiv Jazz Fest starts on October 27 with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Jazz, which this year will be presented to double bassist Veselin Veselinov-Eko. The evening will continue with his duo with pianist Milen Kukosharov - Das Weltschmerz DueTT. The duo was formed in early 2016 with the desire of both artists to explore new musical territories, improvising on themes outside the standard jazz repertoire. Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Piazzolla, Eric Satie, John Williams and Carlos Gardel are some of the composers whose music the duo interprets. Their first album, ImproviSatie, was released in April 2017. It features Sati's six Gnossiennes and three Hymnopedies. Two years later, they released a second album - "Consequences". In it, along with works by Rachmaninoff and Satie, are included six of their own compositions. The concert will be with the special participation of Martin Tashev.

The second concert of the evening will be by another duo, this time combining guitar and double bass. One of the most important jazz guitarists on the contemporary scene - Julian Lage, together with double bassist Jorge Roder - is coming to Plovdiv. The New Yorker calls Lage "a guitarist of the highest order in improvisational music".

October 28 is entirely dedicated to guitarists. The evening will begin with a poetic and virtuosic solo concert by one of the philosophers of the contemporary European jazz scene, guitarist Wolfgang Mutschpil, an ECM Records artist whose new album will be released on September 29. Mutschpil lives in Vienna. He is considered one of the most influential guitarists of his generation. As a child Wolfgang Mutschpil studied classical music and played the violin, but at the age of 15 he discovered his love for the guitar. He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and later at Berklee College of Music. For two years he was part of Gary Burton's quintet. From the mid-1990s until 2002, he lived and worked in New York City. Jazz introduced him to artists such as Trilok Gurtu, Youssou N'Dour, Maria Joao, Dave Liebman, Peter Erskine, Gary Peacock, Larry Grenadier, and many others. He produces young musicians, and since 2004 he has directed the guitar program at the University of Music in Basel. Muthspiel is also the artistic director of the unique international one-year intensive music studies program at Jazzcampus Basel. Wolfgang Mutschpil's projects in recent years include Friendly Travelers, his duo with Brian Blade, and his trio with Larry Grenadier and Chris Cheek. On his 2016 album Rising Grace, Blade and Grenadier are joined by Brad Meldau and Ambrose Akinmusir, and the musicians will later play together as part of Wolfgang Mutschpil's quintet.

The last night of Plovdiv Jazz Fest - October 29, is the time of the pianists! The beginning of this evening will start with the virtuoso and young Italian pianist and singer Francesca Tandoi, who is increasingly gaining popularity on the international jazz scene. Tandoi graduated from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and then from the Kodards University of the Arts in Rotterdam. In a few short years she has already earned international recognition and today she performs in some of the leading theatres and clubs in the USA, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Africa and almost everywhere in Europe, as well as at jazz festivals such as North Sea Jazz, Umbria Jazz, Cork Jazz, Breda Jazz, Amsterdam Arena Stadium, etc. He has collaborated with musicians such as Scott Hamilton, Philip Harper, Jason Brown, Daryl Hall and many others.

Plovdiv Jazz Fest will end with a concert by one of the finest pianists today - Joey Calderazzo. With 15 albums as a leader, Calderazzo has partnered musicians of the stature of Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis, Jack DeJohnette, and Dave Holland. Joey Calderazzo was originally a classical pianist. He turned down a scholarship from Berklee College, dropped out of Manhattan School of Music to dive into the history of jazz and its heroes. In the 1990s, he earned a reputation as a fearless and defining pianist of the new jazz generation. With experience and knowledge, Calderazzo explored the boundaries of improvisation, classical jazz, and post-bop.

This year, Plovdiv Jazz Fest will have a pre-event that will be part of the festival's supporting program. The concert of the trio of the famous pianist Dimitar Bodurov will be on October 26 at 7:30 pm at Radio Plovdiv. Characteristic of the group is the dynamic interaction of piano, double bass and drums. The jazz trio is strongly influenced by folk music and classical composition. Bulgarian-born, Amsterdam-based jazz pianist Dimitar Bodurov remains fascinated by the folklore of his native country, yet his trio sounds unmistakably contemporary.
