"De-Territorialized Hearings: Memento Maritsa"
On November 4, visual artists The New Liquidity in collaboration with Voin de Voin await contemporary art fans at two events. At 2:30 p.m., there will be a meeting with the artists from The New Liquidity at Nishanyan House, 1 Han Omurtag St., Starinen Plovdiv. At 4:00 p.m., a sound walk begins to the Maritsa River, the parking lot of the Water Palace, Maritsa-Yug Blvd.
As part of their ongoing series De-territorialized Listenings/De-territorialized listenings for the residency program ContextAiR Plovdiv 2023, The New Liquidity and Vojn de Vojn present a site-specific intervention focused on the Maritsa River. The river represents the largest unused public space in Plovdiv, becoming one of the most desolate places in the city, largely forgotten by its inhabitants. Maritsa's water arrives in Plovdiv, filled not only with ancient and present traces of de-territorialization, it is also a witness to the individual and collective histories of the Bulgarian and Roma communities.
By organizing a performative and sonic intervention along the banks of the river and turning it temporarily into a research mnemonic site, the work seeks to return the river to its inhabitants. A river acquires value for people only after it becomes part of their habits and memories, adding emotional value to the local community.
Our ideas about water have a direct bearing on how we treat it, influencing our ideas about how it can be used and how it should endlessly serve us. Any water shortage is also a social problem. By juxtaposing old and new images of water, can we rethink our bodily relationship with it to create new pasts and future possibilities? Seeing the river as a deep and rich archive, the artists want to show how water develops embodiment over time – from one body to another, connecting us not only to our own bodies, but also to other bodies/water bodies.
