We Bulgarians are very fond of making fun of the shortcomings of others. We criticize gossip, and we ourselves spread the spiciest gossip. We hate adultery, and it often turns out that we are hiding some other sin. We sneer at drunkenness, and not infrequently, we find ourselves under the table. All this is characteristic of the colourful characters of Chudomir. The iconic characters of Popa, Kaka Siyka, Liar Sabi, Neno the Senegalese, Daskala, Yunak Pavli, and Totka Vdovichka come to life in a colourful and funny kaleidoscope that starts with a funeral and ends with a wedding – the ultimate experiences in one day, in one village, in one Bulgaria. These colourful characters perform amazing acts, but there are never any hard feelings when it's over. The humour is always unwavering, and the line between truth, joke, and fantasy is blurred. And somewhere amidst the songs, dances, and banter, a little sadness creeps in – a beautiful nostalgia for the colourful and unique characters who have gradually disappeared in our unified times. A longing for a captivating language, in which beautiful words have been replaced by cold foreign terms.
