The 151st anniversary of the tragic death of Vasil Levski will be honored tomorrow in Plovdiv with a memorial service and commemoration
On Monday, February 19, 2024, the people of Plovdiv will commemorate the 151st anniversary of the tragic death of the most beloved Bulgarian son - the Apostle of Freedom Vasil Levski, revolutionary, ideologist of the Bulgarian national revolution, organizer and leader of the Bulgarian national liberation movement.
At 10:00 a.m. in the church "St. St. Peter and Paul " will be celebrated by the Stavrophorian priest and steward Todor Todorov - chairman of the church "St. St. Peter and Paul". Organizers of the memorial service are Petko Georgiev - a relative of the Apostle and Municipal Committee "Vasil Levski".
The pilgrimage to the monument of Vasil Levski on the central alley of Bunardjika begins at 11:00 a.m. The presenter will be Zlatko Pavlov. Magi Stoeva, a student in the XII "b" grade of Math High School “Acad. Kiril Popov”.
The ceremony, with the participation of representative military formations - honor company, military brass band and wreath-bearers, members of the "Vasil Levski" Municipal Committee and the "Rodolyubie" Committee, ends with the laying of wreaths and flowers on the monument of the Apostle and a minute's silence.
For many years, the anniversaries of Levski's tragic death were officially celebrated on February 19. Historical records indicate that the hanging of the Apostle of Liberty by the Ottomans took place on February 6, 1873, a time when the Julian calendar was in effect. In 1916, the Gregorian calendar was introduced in Bulgaria. Thus, the dating before its introduction changed, adding 13 days to the dates (events) in the XX century (from 1900 to 1916), and 12 days to the dates (events) in the XIX century and back in time. That is, the date February 6, 1873 according to the Julian calendar (the so-called old style) was transformed into February 18, 1873 according to the Gregorian calendar.
Tonight, the anniversary will be celebrated in the hometown of the Apostle - Karlovo, with a commemorative ceremony, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. in Vasil Levski Square in the city.
