Regional Museum of Natural History - Plovdiv invites residents of Plovdiv and guests of the city on an exciting journey through photographs to Antarctica - the continent surrounding the South Pole of the Earth.
The official opening of the photo exhibition "From Antarctica to the laboratory in Plovdiv" will take place on March 11, 2024 (Monday) at 18:00 in the Exhibition Hall of the RPNM - Plovdiv.
The photo exhibition includes moments from the 31st National Antarctic Expedition and the challenges of one of the Bulgarian polar missions of Fr. Livingston.
Through photographic material, visitors will have the opportunity to follow the "Cellular Biosystems" laboratory of the Institute of Microbiology at the BAS and the research work on the Antarctic samples. In addition to the diversity of Antarctic yeasts, footage of the laboratory's capabilities for biotechnological studies of these unique microorganisms, synthesizing biologically active molecules of cosmetic, ecological and biomedical importance, can also be observed.
Bulgaria is one of the 29 full member countries of the Antarctic Treaty. By virtue of this international agreement, each of the 29 member countries has 1/29 of the continent's frequencies. The treaty regards Antarctica as a scientific reserve and allows for the independence of scientific research, while not allowing military activity on the continent.
