Fractality and Tetrahedra in Ancient Mosaics
"Fractality and Tetrahedra in Ancient Mosaics and the Story of Narcissus"
Creative geometry for children in grades 2-7 at the Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv
We are happy to announce the second of a series of workshops in the partnership program between the Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv and the KIT Academy.
We will study one of the perfect geometric bodies – the tetrahedron, its fractality in art and architecture.
Our joint initiative aims to provide an interdisciplinary educational experience enriched with the cultural value of the ancient mosaics discovered in Plovdiv - one of the most beautiful ancient finds in the city, namely the mosaic of a residential building depicting a mythical hero, probably Narcissus.
Fractality is a topic that intrigues mathematicians, artists, engineers, architects and can be found all around us: in plants, natural phenomena, art, life, buildings, space. Simply put, a fractal is a special kind of pattern that looks similar no matter how close you look at it or how much you zoom in on the image.
Teachers from the PYTHAGOR School of the KIT Academy will provoke children to understand how fractals change our ideas about the surrounding world. The good news is that any child can learn in a fun, non-virtual way to manually assemble a perfect body and discover its fractality. Pythagor School of the KIT Academy is visiting RAM - Plovdiv with this educational challenge. We invite students to engage in a fun exploration of fractals in a STEAM workshop on 04/20/2024.
What will the children do?
*They will learn what a fractal is and a Sierpinski triangle.
*They will learn the curious story of the mosaic of a residential building depicting a mythical character, probably Narcissus
*They will discover fractality in this intriguing mosaic
*They will make their own work of art, a perfect body – a tetrahedron, using the learned mathematical proportion and the inspiring space of the museum as a basis.
Objectives of the lesson:
*Students to discover and love the magic of numbers and the fun side of geometry.
*To gain practical insight, inspiration and skills to explore and make interrelationships between sciences, objects and man.
*To explore the very structure of the universe, its fractal arrangement and the manifestation of this mathematical principle in ancient mosaics.
*To gain real knowledge about the history and significance of the mosaics found in Plovdiv.
