"Stoyna Krastanova" Foundation presents the mythological narratives of textiles in 4 creative studios

The "Stoyna Krastanova" Foundation invites citizens of Plovdiv and guests of the city to the opening of the Mythological Tales of Textiles project (Festival "Textiles and the City". Art Laboratory for Experiments in Textiles). The event will take place on 04/04/2024, Thursday, at 4:00 p.m. in hall 4 of the Plovdiv Cultural Institute, city of Plovdiv, 5 Ivan Perpeliyev Street.

The "Stoyna Krastanova" Foundation seeks to attract young people, tempted by the interest in ancient technologies, the knowledge and skills of using block printing and the creative interpretation of fabric samples inherited from the craft of letterpress or basmage, i.e. color printing on textile. The focus is on the connection with the millennial spiritual traditions of the city, told through textiles.

The project is implemented with the support of the Municipality of Plovdiv under Component 1 "Festivals and significant events" and is part of the city's Cultural Calendar for 2024. Partners are Tourism Council - Plovdiv, AMTII "Prof. Asen Diamandiev" - Plovdiv, Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv, Center for the Study of Intangible Cultural Heritage and Center for Anthropological and Ethno-Sociological Studies at the University of Plovdiv, as well as from the Plovdiv Cultural Institute.

Participants will have the opportunity to visit four creative workshops.

Creative Workshop 1. "Textiles in Sacred Rituals and Folk Ritual Practices" - a series of lectures including ancient, medieval and folk texts presenting the place of flax/hemp and wool in mythological thinking, magical and ritual practices. Knowledge of these materials is complemented by knowledge of the symbols corresponding to the meaning they carry according to the context and chronology of the examples (cultural, religious, social).

Creative studio 2. "Mythological stories of textiles" - a cycle of lectures with a practical orientation and work with fabric samples from the collection of Iliyan Kostadinov and from the fund of the Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv. Participants will have the opportunity not only to hear about the symbolic meaning of individual objects (parts of clothing, home furnishings or ritual fabrics), but also to understand how they have changed over time.

Creative workshop 3. "WORD and TEXTILE - verbal interpretations of textile narratives" - storytelling, through which cultural knowledge is transmitted and important social skills are created - sharing, mutual assistance, creativity.

Creative workshop 4. Experimental block printing - practical training that includes knowledge of the traditions and skills of using the woodblock print - printing, examples and guidelines for using modern materials that facilitate the process and enable everyone to make the symbols, images and drawings themselves, with which one wishes to design and develop his creative idea.

These creative workshops are interconnected with each other so that knowledge is enriched, meanings are understood, symbols are used - all together to create a personal creative project. At the end of the project, the works will be presented in a general exhibition.

The project will end with participation in the Festival Textile and City - "Mythological Tales of Textiles", which will be part of the Days of Young Wine in Plovdiv, where the relationship between textiles and wine will be presented.
