Doykin-Karparov Quartet
"Chamber Stage Plovdiv" invites jazz enthusiasts to its next concert, Eastern Passage Doykin & Karparov Quartet, at the First Studio of Radio Plovdiv on August 3rd at 8:00 PM. The "Doykin-Karparov Quartet" consists of musicians with international careers: Asen Doykin – piano, Vladimir Karparov – saxophone, Igor Spalati – bass, and Peter Somos – drums.
The Doykin-Karparov Quartet was formed in 2017 by long-time friends and musical collaborators Asen Doykin and Vladimir Karparov for a series of performances in Berlin, Germany. Since then, the formation has been giving annual concerts in some of the most renowned jazz venues in and beyond Berlin. The quartet’s music combines Bulgarian rhythms and melodies with the traditions of the jazz idiom. In the spring of 2024, the quartet recorded their debut album, which will be released later this year.
Pianist Asen Doykin has been part of the New York jazz scene for the past twenty-five years. An exceptionally versatile pianist, Asen has worked with some of the most prominent jazz musicians on the New York and world scene, such as Pino Palladino, Joe Locke, Keith Carlock, Tim Lefebvre, Bennie Maupin, Kendrick Scott, and many others. He has performed at some of the most famous New York stages and jazz clubs, including Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, The Steinway Hall, The Blue Note, Birdland, Smalls Jazz Club, Mezzrow Jazz Club, and Joe's Pub.
Asen Doykin has released three albums as a leader and has composed, arranged, and produced numerous full-length albums and music for film, television, radio, and theater. His music has been featured at the Cannes Film Festival, HBO, BBC, WBGO NYC, National Public Radio, Queens Public Television, Jazz Radio Berlin, and Bulgarian national television and radio channels. Asen has established himself as a distinguished jazz educator, leading the piano faculty at the New York Jazz Academy and the Montclair Kimberley Academy.
Vladimir Karparov’s music is both unique and expressive; it is characterized by an unusually successful synthesis between contemporary jazz and the rhythmic and melodic color of vibrant Bulgarian folk music. A multifaceted and inspired musician and talented composer who easily crosses genre boundaries, he has released many successful solo albums, including "Thracian Dance" (2007), Forkolor (2014), Antihypocrisy (2016), and Iglika (2022).
In 2020, he received the award from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria for promoting Bulgarian culture worldwide. In addition to his own formations - V. Karparov Quartet, Balkan Spirit Ensemble, Forkolor Saxophone Quartet, Duo Stawinski & Karparov, Karparty Brass Band, Vladimir actively performs with the Doykin & Karparov Quartet.
The platform "Chamber Stage Plovdiv" is carried out with the support of the Municipality of Plovdiv and is part of the Cultural Calendar of the city for 2024.
