The exhibition “A Piece of River” explores the connection between art and place through the dialogue between the work of Georgi Bozhilov – Slona, the Old Town of Plovdiv, and the works of 14 contemporary Bulgarian artists. At the heart of the concept lies a fantasy that places the legendary group of Plovdiv artists – with their vibrant, bohemian way of life – against the backdrop of the black-and-white socialist reality.
In the mid-1960s, this colorful artistic community was like a life-giving river, springing from the heights of Nebet Tepe, flowing down the old cobblestone streets, passing through beautiful courtyards, entering house after house. The silent figure of Georgi Bozhilov – Slona, whose exhibition organized by Nacho the Culture in 1967 marked the beginning of the Old Town exhibitions, stands as a symbolic crossroads between the local and the global, between what has been and what is yet to come.
The springs are here and cannot easily run dry. New waters keep flowing into the riverbed. At the end of summer, when Plovdiv’s heat slowly begins to recede, the waters burst forth once again.
