The traditional summer film festival "Film Nights in Philippopolis" returns this year with a rich program for all cinema enthusiasts. The 28th edition of the festival will take place at its traditional venue, the Orpheus Open-Air Cinema, with screenings every evening starting at 9:15 p.m. The program features the hottest and newest summer releases, world cinema classics, films for travelers, and a selection of extreme sports and mountaineering films from the BANFF Film Festival.
A special place in the program is reserved for the World Film Classics selection, which includes three legendary titles. On July 8 (Wednesday), audiences will have the opportunity to watch Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic Pulp Fiction. This unforgettable action film starring Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, John Travolta, and many other stars remains a cinematic benchmark and one of the most deserving winners of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, both received in 1995.
On July 13, the program will feature The Dark Knight, a film from the Batman universe. Considered one of the greatest films not only in the Batman franchise but in the superhero genre as a whole, this 2008 masterpiece brought together Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Heath Ledger on the big screen. It was perhaps Ledger’s most acclaimed performance and, sadly, his final completed film. The screening of The Dark Knight at the open-air cinema will also serve as a warm-up for the work of Christopher Nolan, whose new adaptation of The Odyssey will also be shown during Film Nights.
The third film in the World Film Classics series is Snatch. The gangster comedy starring Benicio del Toro, Brad Pitt, and featuring one of Jason Statham’s earliest roles is among Guy Ritchie’s most successful films, establishing him as a unique master of the genre. The screening is scheduled for July 22.
The festival will also include two evenings dedicated to lovers of travel and extreme sports. On July 16, as is tradition at Film Nights, a selection of the best titles from the BANFF Film Festival will be presented. This evening of short films about extreme sports, mountaineering, and travel showcases the very best from the iconic festival held in the Canadian mountain resort.
On July 21, audiences will be able to watch two films from the Cinema for Travelers program. In Show Me Rio and Show Me Lisbon, viewers will discover two of the most beautiful cities in Brazil and Portugal through the eyes of local people, experiencing the authentic atmosphere of these remarkable destinations.
