Plovdiv Jazz Fest: Concert by Jan Garbarek and his band
Friday, July 31 at 9 p.m.
Orpheus Summer Cinema
Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek formed his band in 1979. Today, it features Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu, German pianist Rainer Brüninghaus, and Brazilian bassist Yuri Daniel.
With a career spanning over 50 years, Garbarek is regarded as a defining figure in European jazz. His music is lyrical, vocal, meditative, and distinctly Scandinavian. Inspired by John Coltrane, he began playing as a teenager and later worked with composer George Russell. In 1969, he signed with the ECM label.
The contrast between song-like and poetic elements, simplicity, and the intensity of free improvisation defines Garbarek’s unique sound. He has released over 30 albums in collaboration with international stars such as Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Bobo Stenson, Terje Rypdal, and others.
