Art and Discussion
Art and Discussion. The Regional Art Exhibition in Plovdiv, 1958
Wednesday, 15 July – Tuesday, 25 August
Kapana Gallery
The exhibition will officially open on 15 July at 6 p.m.
Curators Krasimir Linkov, art historian and Director of the Plovdiv City Art Gallery, and Milena Kitipova, Chief Curator of the gallery, examine the dynamic relationship between Bulgarian artists, institutional art criticism, and public perception during the 1950s—a period marked by profound social and cultural change in Bulgaria.
The display brings together a large number of works that were originally exhibited in 1958. Where original works could not be located, they have been replaced with paintings by the same artists created during the same period.
Visitors will have the opportunity to view paintings, prints, and sculptures by some of Bulgaria's most prominent artists, including Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, Anastas Staykov, Chavdar Pashev, Georgi Mihaylov, Todor Goshev, Petko Abadzhiev, Zhivka Peycheva, Petar Grigorov, Angel Tomov, Nyagul Stanchev, Mityo Dimitrov, Nedelcho Nanev, Angel Kolarov, Ivan Kirkov, Paskal Struzhev, Nikola Kolev, Stamo Prodanov, Dimitar Kumanov, Dimitar Pavlov, and others.
The exhibition is complemented by extensive archival and documentary materials that trace the key artistic and historical developments of the period. A programme of public talks and discussions with curators, art historians, and other specialists will accompany the exhibition, offering visitors the opportunity to engage in conversations about both the historical context of the exhibition and broader issues relating to contemporary art.
The project is supported by the Municipality of Plovdiv and is part of the 2026 Cultural Calendar.
