“Interior Accessories of Feminine Gender“ is an innovative project by fashion designer Mariela Gemisheva. It is inspired by some of her earlier experimental works in fashion – “My Wedding Dress on the Roof” (1998), "Lady's carpet" (2006) and “Selfportrait” (2008). The project will develop in two stages.
The first act is a performance between June 19 and 21. Gemisheva's fashion label FAC (Fashion Art Center) will decompose a number of wedding dresses and transform them into original functional home accessories – rugs, door mats, blankets, pillows (all of them are of feminine gender in Bulgarian, incidentally). In the artist's interpretation “FAC could just as well mean Frequently Asked Questions or, if you wish, another popular English word beginning with an F”.
The performance will evolve into an installation between June 21 and 28. The project challenges traditional perceptions of ritual clothing and provokes a new perspective on the emblematic wedding dress as a symbol of “purity, virginity and submission”. Project assistants are Petya Baleva and Victoria Dineva, third-year fashion students at the National Academy of Art, Sofia.
