Plovdiv 2019: One dance week 2019 - KIND (CHILD)
PEEKING TOM, one of the world's most thrilling and recognizable dance troupes, will be returning to Plovdiv to present its latest show, KIND, as part of the ONE DANCE WEEK 2019 festival.
KIND is the long-awaited dance interpretation of the convoluted children's world by the choreographers Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier. In Plovdiv, the performance will take place at the Boris Hristov House of Culture on 20 and 21! September 2019. KIND will arrive to Bulgaria just months after its world premiere at Les Théâtres de la Ville in Luxembourg (23 April 2019), and will be a highlight of ONE DANCE WEEK's special edition, part of the programme of Plovdiv 2019.
Bulgarian audiences had an opportunity to get a glimpse at the hyperrealist aesthetics of PEEPING TOM during ONE DANCE WEEK 2017, when the Belgian troupe presented its show "Moeder" ("Mother"). KIND is the final installment of a remarkable trilogy dedicated to family relations. After "Vader" ("Mother") (2014), an emotional and intense account of ageing, and the moving psychological portrait "Moeder" (2016), now it's the child's turn.
KIND's choreographers, Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier, have directed the third part through the prism of the world of the child - often misunderstood, ignored by the adults and filled with fantasies. The show presents how a child's perspectives change along with the developing body, how a young personality takes shape as the child becomes an adult. Each movement in this astonishing dance portrait is based on dreams, choices, fears, doubts, insecurity… Questions are posed: How, attempting to cope in diverse situations, children establish order in their world through fabulations, role models or mimicking their parents' behaviour? What are the roles of the mother and the father in these complex processes? As in the previous shows, KIND presents changes in time and space, so characteristic of the PEEPING TOM's works.
Ms Carrizo and Mr Chartier founded the contemporary dance troupe PEEPING TOM in 2000 and are its current directors. The sets for their shows evoke familiar places - a museum, a garden, a maternity ward and a living container - but only at first sight. At the next moment all this is given away in a bid to challenge the logic, taboos and conceptions of what is considered normal. Along with the expressive language of movement and the masterly dance techniques, the artists use movie effects and sound recorded in real time. At the centre is the human being, in all its states, with its pain and joys, with his dark side deserving of illumination.
PEEPING TOM is the winner of a number of international awards, among them Best Dance Show in France for "Le Salon" (2005), the Mont Blanc Young Directors Award at the Salzburg Festival (2007) and Patrons Circle Award at the International Festival of Arts in Melbourne. The project "32 rue Vandenbranden" won the prestigious British Olivier Award for best dance performance in 2015. "Vader" won in the same category at an international competition in Barcelona.
