‘Bells Ringing’ presents the historic heritage and achievements of Eastern Orthodox art by studying and showcasing church bells in Plovdiv, Varna, Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo.
The scientific study includes the profiling (sound recording, photography, cataloging, archiving, describing and digitising) of church bells in the four cities and the only bell foundry in Plovdiv, as well as the establishment of the BELL2019 digital storage that will be presenting them. A seminar, ‘Traditions, Spirit and Modernity in the City’ (in Veliko Tarnovo) will apply in practice various models for the digitisation and distribution of cultural, historical and spiritual values.
The project's artistic content focuses on the development of a music compilation of bell and urban sounds, a video exhibition featuring bells (at the Small Basilica in Plovdiv) and its presentation in the interactive show ‘Between God and People’ (Plovdiv).
The project is a production of the Institute of Mathematics and Information Sciences with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
