In 2019 it is 127 years since the first national art exhibition was held, also in Plovdiv. In the central pavilion of the First Bulgarian Agricultural and Industrial Exposition in 1892, a special art department was organized, with works by 16 artists. Among them were nationally and internationally renowned artists, such as: Anton Mitov, Ivan (Jan) Mrkvička, Antoni Piotrowski, Emil Holarek, Nikolay Pavlovich, Petko Klisurov, and Konstantin Velichkov. The project restores that memorable exhibition to introduce our Bulgarian artistic heritage to a contemporary audience.
The exhibition was developed by the team of the City Art Gallery of Plovdiv, based on the research of art historian Plamen Petrov and the curatorial decisions of Krassimir Linkov, art historian and Gallery Director. The exhibition is held as part of the project The First Bulgarian Exposition – Plovdiv 1892 and the Beginning of Organized Artistic Life in Bulgaria.
On display at the Gallery are some of the original works by 7 artists, which our ancestors had the pleasure to see 127 years ago. The collection also includes copies of some of the paintings so that the viewers could have a complete idea of what the Art Department looked like.
The project is implemented by the City Gallery of Fine Arts Plovdiv in partnership with the National Art Gallery, Sofia City Art Gallery, Boris Denev Gallery in Veliko Tarnovo, the Art Gallery of Kazanlak, Ivan Vazov National Library in Plovdiv, the State Archives Directorate in Plovdiv and with the consultation of the historian Vladimir Balchev and the work of the students in the Multimedia and Virtual Reality graduate course at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts, under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Vessela Statkova.
The project is implemented by the City Gallery of Fine Arts Plovdiv.
