This year's edition of Plovdiv Jazz Fest, which will take place from November 6 to 7 at the Hall of Culture "Boris Hristov"
:: The first festival evening (November 6) of Plovdiv Jazz Fest will begin (from 19:00 h.) with the premiere of the latest author's project of famous pianist, arranger and composer Milen Kukosharov - Wind Harmonium. In recent years, he has expanded his professional interests, as a composer, in the field of classical music, theater and cinema. Wind Harmonium is a kind of crossover that includes techniques and forms of classical and jazz music, and the sound is close to chamber music. The compositions are new, among them there are themes that Milen Kukosharov has created for theatrical performances in the last year. In addition, however, Wind Harmonium includes eight other people. Special guests will be the world-renowned Bulgarian clarinetist living in the USA - Ilian Iliev and the mezzo-soprano Michiko Date from Japan. The musicians also take part in the project: Darina Ivanova (flute), Gabriela Todorova (oboe), Dobromira Vaklinova (clarinet, bass clarinet), Rosalia Angelova (bassoon), Alexander Lekov (double bass), Atanas Popov (percussion instruments).
After Wind Harmonium from 21:00 h., there will be the first musician meeting on one stage of pianist Antoni Donchev and drummer Hristo Yotsov.
Besides performers, Hristo Yotsov and Antoni Donchev are teachers and composers. 35 years ago, the two founded one of the best Bulgarian jazz ensembles "Acoustic Version". Donchev and Yotsov are a vivid example of contemporary musicians who easily and skillfully deal with diverse forms of music making and who can easily combine the diversity of jazz style.
This year the festival will honor Antoni Donchev and Hristo Yotsov, who is also celebrating his 60th birthday, with an Award for overall contribution to jazz. In 2020, the winners will be two, who will simultaneously be awarded as creators of the group "Acoustic Version", but each of them separately - as a figure that has a huge impact and influence on the development of the jazz in Bulgaria.
:: The festival will close the trio of one of the greatest bassists in the world - Avishai Cohen, who agreed to perform two concerts on November 7 - from 19:30 h. and from 21:00 h. Avishai Cohen's compositions reflect a vast musical universe of traditions, cultures, languages and styles: from Hebrew songs to Ladin folk songs, from a combination of classical and jazz music to jazz standards and contemporary jazz. Avishai Cohen arrives in Bulgaria with his new trio, which includes Elchin Shirinov (piano) and Ronnie Caspi (drums). On the stage of Plovdiv Jazz Fest they will present the latest 17th album of Avishai Cohen - Arvoles. Plovdiv will be part of the "50:50:50" tour, which includes 50 concerts in 50 cities and is dedicated to the musician's 50th birthday.
:: Every year the Festival has an accompanying program, which includes a variety of events.
Photo exhibition "Andrei Daniel - the last seven years" is a guest at Plovdiv Jazz Fest. Photo exhibition "Andrey Daniel - the last seven years" will visit Plovdiv for 3 days. It will be located from 6.11 at 18:00 h. to 8.11 at 18:00 h. in the House of Culture "Boris Hristov". This exhibition is an attempt at a short reportage story with visual accents from the last seven years of the great artist, teacher Prof. Andrey Daniel / 1952 - 2020 /. The exhibition is a project of the Foundation "Vapreki".
On November 7 in Bee Bop Café from 14:00 h. there will be a lecture by Svetoslav Nikolov and Miroslava Katsarova on the work of the Norwegian jazz singer, of Bulgarian origin, Radka Tonef. The event will be held with Jazz FM.
The day after the end of the main program (November 8), the final event for the festival will be the presentation of Mila Ivanova's book "Paper boat on the high seas" and a conversation with its author in Bee Bop Café from 14:00 h. 65 texts on topics, inspired by her real experiences. Each page is a real case, or as Mila says, a real feeling. 65 texts that tell about hopes, fears, nostalgia, passion, beauty, madness, gratitude and love. Some of these essays were written specifically for the collection, others are already known from Mila's blog, and a third she reworked entirely in compiling a "Paper Boat on the High Seas."
