Phaedra / Radiant

"PHAEDRA - RADIANT" VISITS THE ANCIENT THEATER
on 29.09. 2021 from 20:00 h.
INCLUDED IN THE AUTUMN SALON OF ARTS PLOVDIV 2021

The star tandem Boyka Velkova and Teodosii Spasov are the basis of the new performance "Phaedra - Radiant" by Azaryan Theater. Boyka Velkova is a director and incarnates in Phaedra, and the music is by Teodosii Spasov, who was the first to play jazz on kaval and mix folk music with elements of jazz and classical. All participants in the show are remarkable professionals. Petya Silyanova plays a sensual, dedicated, wise Diotima, Plamen Manasiev builds Theseus as a complex image, torn by internal conflicts, and the young actors Mihail Sarvanski (Hippolytus) and Sevar Ivanov (Agathon) play with such acting zeal, with such sculpture, such plasticity, of their relationship - their duel, turns into an acrobatic dance, into a flight - a clash of two characters, as ancient as they are modern. The main credit for the influential choreography goes to Filip Milanov, as well as for the interesting scenography and costumes to Boyana Bachvarova.

This is a modern "Phaedra", written by the young doctor of philosophy and aesthetics Petar Plamenov, a lecturer at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". This is not the ancient Greek work of Euripides, nor of Seneca, nor Racine's interpretation of Classicism. Plamenov "steps" on the ancient Greek mythology and together with Boyka Velkova build a strong, modern, interesting and exciting "Phaedra". This play is inspired by mythology, but it is in the present day to remind us that despite the past millennia, man has not yet become Master of his inner world, has not achieved inner harmony and has the fate of the burning butterfly in the flame of the candle.

Phaedra in ancient Greek means "shiny", "radiant". Everyone in her family knows love and loves it, but they are all subjected to unsuspected trials. The motto of Petar Plamenov's play "To sin and not have sin in sin" suggests the basic idea that strong love is not a sin, that love is above everything, that love is the meaning of life. The myth of Phaedra is one of the most exciting stories, because it frankly raises the question: if love is not only passion but also the essence of being, why for man it becomes a test of fate? Perhaps the answer lies in the ancient verse: "To love means to see beauty and not be afraid of its light."

Boyka Velkova's bold, elegant and deep directing is dedicated to revealing the inner motives of the characters. She emphatically depicts female emotionality with its unexpected depth and contradiction, as well as looks without reproach at the male ego, at the will to authority and power.
