Anxious modernity in Plamen Veltchev's paintings in his RECOIL exhibition
The painter Plamen Veltchev presents his first solo exhibition in his native Plovdiv after two decades in the United States. On the first floor of the Temporary Exhibition Halls at the City Gallery of Fine Arts (15 Knyaz Alexander I Street) the author exhibits 22 of his works, some of which were created after his return to Plovdiv in 2019. The series of paintings, drawings and graphics bears the energetic title Recoil - an artistic reflection of the dramatic processes in the world, which affect human nature.
Plamen Veltchev shares:
"My inspiration comes from modern global conflicts and the struggle for individual freedoms, which is intertwined with greater forces. I am most interested in revealing the consequences of modern unrest and global instability. In my new paintings, I express rather new symbolic meanings of danger, dominating detonations and infected conquered freedoms. Recoil is a consequence and an emblem of repressed human rights and violated independence."
The artist was born in Plovdiv in 1981. He graduated with a degree in Graphics from the Tsanko Lavrenov National Arts School and moved to Philadelphia, USA, where in 2004 he graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with a degree in Graphics.
He has had seven solo exhibitions in the United States and participated in more than 35 group exhibits. His works are in the personal collection of the American film director M. Night Shyamalan, who in 2006 included works by Plamen Veltchev in the interior design of his famous film Lady in the Water.
The artist has won a number of awards for graphics in the United States, and this year in Plovdiv he was awarded the prize of patron Dimitar Georgiev for a promising young author.
The exhibition Recoil opens on July 28 at 6 pm and can be viewed until August 17.
