According to the climatic zones of Bulgaria (Tashkov, 1982) the territory of the Municipality of Plovdiv is in the transitional-continental climatic zone.

The relief is essential for the formation of the local climate. The city also has its influence on the formation of its own microclimate. The hills with their height, orientation of the slopes, rocks and vegetation, saddle connections between them, the valleys - the Maritsa river valley and the lowest area around the Rowing Canal, form the specific microclimate, which is different in different areas of the territory. It is characterized by relatively mild winters, but with instability of winter temperatures. Summer is hot, autumn is warm and long, and spring is cool, with frequent frosts. The average annual temperature is 12.2°С, and the average annual amplitude is 23.4°С.
